Parent Cooperative

A parent cooperative in early childhood education (ECE) is a unique model where families actively participate in the operation and educational experience of the centre. It’s not just enrolment. It is jointly managed by parents and educators, where families contribute to both governance and daily operations.

Benefits:

  • Participate in decision-making and policy development
  • Serve on boards or committees
  • Engage in fundraising and community events
  • For children: More adult attention, strong home–school continuity, and a rich social environment
  • For parents: Deeper insight into their child’s learning, stronger community ties, and opportunities to shape the learning environment
  • For educators: Collaborative partnerships that enhance curriculum and support

Governance Structure

  • Parents elect a board of directors
  • The committee hires qualified ECE teachers
  • The centre operates as a non-profit, with shared responsibilities across families
